Kevin Mullaney, PhD

Kevin is a sought after leadership mentor and educator, a doctor of Industrial/Organizational Psychology, an experienced Naval Officer with more than 15 years in the submarine force, and the emeritus chair of the Leadership, Ethics, and Law department at the United States Naval Academy.
Kevin received his commission through the Navy ROTC program at Notre Dame. After completing nuclear engineering training, he served as a division officer on the USS MARYLAND and completed five strategic deterrent patrols. He subsequently completed two Department Head tours, first aboard the USS ALEXANDRIA as the Navigator, executing a shipyard period in Portsmouth, NH., and then as the Weapons Officer on the USS HELENA in San Diego, CA, where he completed two Western Pacific Deployments and 4 missions vital to national security. Following his Department Head tours, he worked for the submariner force commander as the Future Capabilities, Experimentation, and War Gaming Officer. Kevin next reported onboard USS SANTA FE as the Executive Officer, completing a shipyard period in Portsmouth, NH and moving the ship to Pearl Harbor, HI in preparation for a deployment.
In 2009, Kevin was selected as a Permanent Military Professor and completed his M.A. and Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at the University of Illinois. In 2013, he reported to the Leadership, Ethics, and Law department at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, where he served as department chair, course director for both leadership core courses, and director of the Experiential Leader Development center. Kevin pursues an active researching agenda focused on the relationship between personality and leadership and frequently provides talks both on his academic work and various leader development topics. His intellectual interests center on the psychological foundations of character and intentionality.
